Rhabdomyolysis
|
All
statins are linked to rhabdomyolysis risk, but
Baycol was considered a significantly greater
risk of fatality occuring due to rhabdomyolysis
according to the fda.

Rhabdomyolysis causes muscle cells to break down and
allows cell contents to enter the bloodstream. The muscle
protein ends up trapped in the kidneys and clogs up
the kidney filtering process and leading to kidney failure
in addition to other organ system disorders. Rhabdomyolysis
is a very rare side effect of pharmaceutical drugs,
but it was associated to about 100 deaths worldwide
with Baycol patients. The high number of rhabdomyolysis
cases found in Baycol patients prompted the Baycol recall
on August 8, 2001.
Rhabdomyolysis Symptoms Can Include:
(In specific muscles or more generalized)
- Muscle pain
- Weakness
- Malaise
- Fever
- Dark Urine
- Nausea
- Vomiting

Statin Information
Baycol belonged to the class of drugs called statins
intended to lower cholesterol levels by blocking a specific
enzyme in the body involved in making cholesterol. Although
every type of statin is associated to the very rare
condition rhabdomyolysis, rhabdomyolysis was found to
occur more frequently when using Baycol. If you have

Future of Statins
Baycol was the 12th prescription drug to be taken off the
U.S. market because of dangerous
side effects. Baycol side effects included rhabdomyolysis,
a life-threatening condition involving muscle complication.
Baycols recall occurred in August 2001, and some pharmaceutical
executives think that Baycol left a mark on the FDA, making
them more cautious in the last couple years. Many feel the
increased caution is warranted after over 100 deaths worldwide
because of Baycol side effects resulted from the statin
drug. Bayer now finds themselves under pressure to defend
themselves in the large number of lawsuits that have been
filed against them for the Baycol side effects.

In August 2001, Baycol was recalled after reports of deadly
cases of rhabdomyolysis continued to concern regulators. All
statins are linked to rhabdomyolysis risk, but Baycol was
considered a significantly greater risk of fatality occurring
due to rhabdomyolysis according to the FDA. Baycols
manufacturer has been criticized for not taking earlier action
in warning the patients of the Baycol
